Laidback not to many people private. Bar Resturant very close by. Casual atmosphere.
My wife and I camped at Douglas Campground for 25 years. We are both now in our mid sixties and I am permanently disabled. We loved our time there. We were permanent campers. We would move up to the Lake and stay until closing. The first 21 years were the best times of our life but then Mr Douglas passed away and his daughter inherited the campground. We never had any problems when Mr. Douglas ran the campground and never any problems when his Mother ran the campground. Little did we know that when she took over we would be singled out about our dock (which we always had) as to being TOLD not asked -we were TOLD that another camper was going to put their boat on our dock. We did not know this person from Adam but the boat went on our dock. For the following 3 years when we got up there in May, it was said to us, the dock has to go here, no the dock has to go there, you have to put your boat on the other side of the dock. The last straw was when she sent the helper down and told us that we had to take OUR SEA-DOO OFF OF OUR DOCK!! That was it for us. Our pontoon boat was on one side and our neighbor told us that he had changed shifts and that they were only coming up to the Lake no more than 4-5 times over the summer since they live down in the Albany area and he said he was going to put his boat on a mouring and said that he had no problem with us putting the Sea-Doo on the other side of OUR dock! To this day we don't know why she had a problem with us putting OUR watercraft on OUR dock. It's too bad that we felt singled out. No one else up to the lake have ever been told they had to share their dock or were jerk ed around as to where they had to put their dock! Mr. Douglas never made anyone share their dock. His policy was that people could pull up to your dock to load or unload passengers or that campers could fish off your dock. As all this wasn't bad enough we were then told that we had to start paying Five Dollars A Piece for our Grandchildren to come in to the campground. This was NEVER Mr. DOUGLASS POLICY although she told me it was. Well enough is enough and we had ENOUGH!! We have left Douglas Campground and will never Return! We always called it our little piece of Heaven but the last 4 years has been a anything but that! What I forgot to mention was the fact that because of my disability, I could not get on the Sea-Doo if it was on a mouring. I don't have the range of motion to swing my legs over the Sea-Doo because of my hip replacements. It didn't seem to matter to anyone!
While this is our second time at the Douglas, I believe it will be our last. The lake is wonderful and the kids love it, the cabin is clean - but - outfitted with items you would not purchase at a garage sale... We stayed for a week; they came and picked up the trash twice... and never once stopped to see how things were going. Don't forget to bring everything you need including toilet paper, they supply nothing but sheets for the bed. And the free Wi-Fi is only at the bar. I guess I am getting spoiled in my old age, if I pay over $1,000 for a week stay I am expecting more.
great service!
Stayed 3 days in mid July in my 30 amp travel trailer for $37.80/night for electric, water and sewer. Free WiFi only around restaurant. Verizon is bad but most of the Adirondacks is that way. Plug is 30 amp but breaker is 20 amp. Not an issue as weather was nice and didn't need A.C. Arrived on Monday but looks like only 3 spots were open as most campers are long-term. Silver Lake is private and they have a boat dock and ramp as well as a marked off swimming area. 2 or 3 jet skiers and couple of pontoons used boat ramp/docks everyday. Has a restaurant/bar but it's closed Monday and Tuesday. Pretty quiet place and has more of a locals hideout feel. Suspect weekend might be different with more boaters.
